Interview with The List (UNEDITED)
When did you decide to form Alarm Bells? Was this something you had in mind before Dananananaykroyd split?
The last Dananananaykroyd tour was definitely a catalyst, having a growing number of ideas meant we had to create somewhere to put them. David [Roy, guitarist] and I had a little faction on tours, our hotel room was where dumb TV shows, live bootleg videos of our favourite bands, prog and hardcore albums and the worst chat imaginable went down. Eventually, organically the idea for the band came through pretty strong, from there everything kind of fell into place. The perfect musician friends who were on the same wavelength just kind of appeared and off it went.
Was it important for you to stay busy and ‘get back out there’ again quickly?
That’s just the way it ended up, we were having fun making these songs together, we played one gig then Bloc Party asked us to play for them. Then we won an award that gave us enough money to put a record out. How quickly we appeared again is down to other people’s interest in what we were doing, we are continually grateful for the support we’re receiving.
Is there any particular significance in the choice of name?
Alarm Bells? Reality is a unified whole and our thought patterns cut it up into fragments, this makes us disconnect and go on little insane journeys in our minds and sometimes you get so far away from the truth of reality that a weird pang can happen in your stomach and you don’t know why. That’s an alarm bell, they are like little anchors. Negative feelings or alarm bells should make you piss yourself laughing because they are a reminder that your mind is talking shit again.. Although, it was Ryan [McGinness, bass] who came up with the name because he wanted the band to sound like Tubular Bells, so i dunno..
You recently released Part One of a 12” vinyl series - where can we pick it up, and when can we expect part two?
Part One is available from our band camp page (alarmbells.bandcamp.com) and also some independent record shops in Scotland. At the start of the band we made a conscious decision to do everything with a sense of care, right down to who prints our shirts. With that in mind we were pumped to make something that people could hold and do, vinyl is an amazing tool to be present with the music you listen to, it makes you flip the record over in the middle to keep you in the room with it instead of away with the fairies like a mad zombie infinite spotify playlist guy. We are writing Part Two and we’ll be testing it out live before we record it but it will be out this year, probably in the summer.
If you were to run the band like a wanky chain coffeeshop, what would your ‘mission statement’ be?
What do you mean “if”? We DO run the band like a wanky coffee chain. We are a double shot, ethically sourced, fair trade, decaf, cayman island based, iced, soy musical outfit absolutely covered in whipped cream.
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
Recording Part Two and playing live some more, hanging about, talking to strangers, thinking about melons, sharing my knowledge of “legs”, favin’ tweets and asking people about their stuff! But.. i’ll probably end up staying in Aurora, mopping up hurl and lung butter - j’augh!
